Because we think the best people to listen to aren't always the people asking for the microphone. Self-nomination naturally favours people who are comfortable promoting themselves, writing abstracts and telling us why their work deserves a place on the stage.

But confidence isn't the same as wisdom. And being good at presenting yourself doesn't make you good at changing someone else's practice nor influencing industry.

We'd rather find the person who quietly made a difference. Someone who changed the way their team works, or someone who found a better way, or someone who learned something the hard way.

Often, those people don't see themselves as speakers. But we do because they often bring a certain humility to the stage when sharing their experience.
